Transference and countertransference are powerful emotional dynamics that shape the therapeutic relationship in both mental health and substance use disorder treatment settings. This training helps counselors and clinicians recognize how past experiences, trauma, and relational patterns influence client interactions and their own reactions as helpers. Participants will explore the signs, risks, and benefits of these dynamics while learning practical techniques to maintain boundaries, enhance therapeutic effectiveness, and prevent emotional burnout. Through case examples, supervision tools, and reflective practices, attendees will gain the skills needed to handle these complex relational processes with confidence and professionalism.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Utilize reflection, supervision, and self-awareness tools to monitor their own reactions and prevent countertransference from negatively impacting treatment.
- Define and recognize transference and countertransference and describe how these dynamics commonly appear in mental health and SUD treatment settings.
- Apply clinical strategies to manage emotionally charged interactions and maintain therapeutic boundaries during transference or countertransference events.
